On
the spectrum of gambling games of chance versus gambling games of skill, poker sits squarely at the skill end all by itself. Poker is
a game of people, played against other people and not against the house. It is possible, and usually likely, to have a large edge in
your favor. Sensible wagering is all about betting when you have a positive expectation, and doing it over and over in situations where
your chances of going broke for your bankroll are miniscule.
Like life, poker is a gamble, but the longterm results are determined by skill, and that skill is variable. To bottom line it, this
means that John could make $15/hour in one game, while making $24/hour in another game with the same size bets, because John can exercise
his skill more effectively against his opponents in the second game. Finding the right circumstances to play can be even more important than
how you play. In other words, you can make money in poker by using skill before you even sit down at the table.
State names take you to pages of government agencies that regulate poker.
